About Huddersfield: A huge and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the eleventh largest town in the UK, housing a population of about 168,000 (2017). The town is placed roughly halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the biggest town in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, well known over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, wool, electric motors and sheet metal. It was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, faced with losing their jobs on account of the threat of mechanization, destroyed mills and machinery and even went to the extreme of killing mill owners. The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 and three successive league titles in the 1920's.
