About Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the eleventh largest town (not including cities) in the United Kingdom, boasting a population of just over 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is about 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of electric motors, chemicals, sheet metal, wool and textiles. Huddersfield was the scene of much unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood owing to increasing mechanisation, demolished mills and machinery and even went as far as killing textile mill owners. Huddersfield has been settled for upwards of four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition with regards to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU in a bitter row over payments to players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in 1924,25 and 26).
