The town has a proud tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a bitter disagreement over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and three successive league titles in the 1920's.
