Huddersfield is placed halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in that borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of two rivers, the Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of sheet metal, textiles, electric motors, wool and chemicals. It was the scene of significant violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, fearful of losing their jobs because of increased mechanization, demolished machines and mills and in some cases even murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a disagreement over payments to players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were the first English club to win three league titles on the trot.

The town has been the birthplace of various famous Huddersfield such as actor James Mason, cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone, former PM Harold Wilson and Derek Ibbotson.
