About Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), housing a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town is positioned halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is approximately 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, renowned over the years for the manufacture of chemicals, electric motors, textiles, wool and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of significant unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood on account of greater mechanization, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield nowadays is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition in relation to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a row over the payment of players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning three league titles on the trot.

The area has been the birthplace of numerous notable Huddersfield including the likes of actor James Mason, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Derek Ibbotson and Harold Wilson.
