Huddersfield a Potted History: A huge and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is at present the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, boasting a population of around 168,000. The town is positioned midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is about 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial town, well known over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, wool, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. It was the scene of considerable violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, faced with losing their jobs as a consequence of greater mechanization, destroyed machines and mills and even went as far as attacking and murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a proud sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were also famous for winning three successive league titles.

Huddersfield has been the birthplace of numerous notable Huddersfield including the likes of footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone, movie actor James Mason, Derek Ibbotson (athlete) and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
