Huddersfied was noted in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a proud sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
