About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town is placed roughly midway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial area, well known over the centuries for the manufacture of electric motors, textiles, chemicals, sheet metal and wool. It was the scene of significant violence and unrest during the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a result of the march of mechanization, destroyed mills and their machines and even went as far as murdering mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
