Huddersfield a Potted Guide: An enormous and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the 11th largest town (not including cities) in the United Kingdom, being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town is placed about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is about 191 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, recognized over the centuries for the manufacture of chemicals, textiles, wool, sheet metal and electric motors. Huddersfield was the scene of much violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers called the Luddites, faced with losing their jobs because of ever increasing mechanization, damaged mills and their machines and in some cases even attacked mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a bitter dispute over players being paid. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and three successive league titles.

Huddersfield has been the birthplace of several noteworthy Huddersfield including athlete Derek Ibbotson, former PM Harold Wilson, James Mason and Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer).
