Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and large market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, boasting a population of around 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is approximately 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in that borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, wool, sheet metal and electric motors. The town was the scene of much unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, faced with losing their livelihood as a consequence of the threat of mechanisation, damaged machines and mills and in some cases even attacked and killed mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU in a row over the payment of players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and also won 3 successive league titles in 1924,25 and 26).
