Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and huge market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of about 168,000 (2017). The town is positioned about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is approximately 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in the borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of two rivers, the Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, famous over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, wool, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. It was the scene of considerable unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a consequence of increasing mechanization, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over players being paid. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles.
