Huddersfield a Short Guide: An immense and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is currently the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of about 168,000. The town is placed halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is some 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is included in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial area, renowned over the centuries for the manufacture and production of wool, chemicals, textiles, electric motors and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of some violent unrest during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs on account of the threat of mechanization, destroyed machines and mills and even attacked and killed mill owners. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a bitter disagreement over players being paid. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were the first English club to win 3 league titles on the trot.
