Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in the borough. It stands in the valleys of two rivers, the Holme and Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the production and manufacture of chemicals, sheet metal, textiles, electric motors and wool. It was the scene of much violence and unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, scared of losing their livelihood as a result of ever increasing mechanisation, demolished weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Regardless of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and also won three league titles on the trot.
