About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's 11th largest town, boasting a population of close to 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is placed halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is approximately 191 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in this borough. It lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial town, well known over the centuries for the manufacturing of electric motors, wool, chemicals, textiles and sheet metal. It was the scene of considerable unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearful of losing their jobs thanks to more and more mechanisation, wrecked machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. The area has been settled for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU in a dispute over payments to players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were also famous for winning three successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
