About Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is actually the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, housing a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is approximately 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the biggest town in this borough. It sits in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, recognized over the years for the production of wool, textiles, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, frightened of losing their jobs as a consequence of ever increasing mechanization, damaged machines and mills and in some cases even attacked textile mill owners. Regardless of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition in relation to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over the payment of players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and three successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of various well known Huddersfield including former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), actor James Mason and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
