About Huddersfield: A large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the eleventh largest town (not including cities) in the UK, housing a population of around 168,000. The town is positioned roughly halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of two rivers, the Colne and Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial area, widely known over the years for the manufacturing of electric motors, sheet metal, textiles, chemicals and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of some violent unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a consequence of increasing mechanisation, wrecked mills and machinery and in some cases even killed textile mill owners. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was noted in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles.

The area has been the birthplace of many prominent Huddersfield such as Chris Balderstone, Harold Wilson, movie actor James Mason and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
