Huddersfield a Brief Guide: A historic and huge market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is actually the eleventh largest town in the United Kingdom, boasting a population of close to 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned about midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in that borough. It stands in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, widely known over the centuries for the manufacture of wool, sheet metal, chemicals, textiles and electric motors. It was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood on account of increasing mechanization, demolished mills and machinery and even went as far as killing mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the biggest employer in the town today is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a bitter disagreement over payments to players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 and also won three successive league titles.
