About Huddersfield: A historic and large market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is currently the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, having a population of just over 168,000 (2017). The town is placed midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is about 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is just to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, famous over the centuries for the manufacture and production of chemicals, sheet metal, wool, textiles and electric motors. The town was the scene of much unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood as a result of ever increasing mechanisation, wrecked machinery and mills and even went as far as attacking and murdering textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in the town today is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long sporting tradition and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
