About Huddersfield: A large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield at the current time is the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom, boasting a population of somewhere near 168,000. Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban area in that borough. It sits in the valleys of two rivers, the Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, widely known over the centuries for the manufacture and production of chemicals, textiles, wool, sheet metal and electric motors. It was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a result of the march of mechanization, wrecked machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of killing mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in the town these days is the University.

The area has been settled for over 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning three league titles on the trot.

The town has been the birthplace of many well known Huddersfield such as James Mason, former PM Harold Wilson, Derek Ibbotson (athlete) and cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone.
