Review of Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of close to 168,000. Huddersfield is placed about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in this borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town near the University.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, wool, textiles, electric motors and sheet metal. The town was the scene of considerable unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a consequence of the march of mechanization, damaged mills and their machines and even went as far as murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for over four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and three league titles on the trot.

The area has been the birthplace of numerous famous Huddersfield including Harold Wilson, cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone, Derek Ibbotson and Hollywood actor James Mason.
