Huddersfield a Brief Guide: A historic and huge market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom, boasting a population of somewhere near 168,000. The town is placed midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is some 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous settlement in that borough. Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, famous over the centuries for the manufacture of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. The town was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, terrified of losing their livelihood as a result of the threat of mechanisation, demolished mills and their machines and even went as far as murdering textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in the town these days is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter disagreement over players being paid. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning three successive league titles.
