About Huddersfield: A historic and huge market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield today is the UK's 11th largest town, being home to a population of just over 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is about 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban settlement in the borough. It stands in the valleys of 2 rivers, the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, widely known over the centuries for the production of chemicals, electric motors, textiles, sheet metal and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of considerable unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers known as the Luddites, terrified of losing their jobs due to more and more mechanization, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and killing mill owners. The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in the 1920's.
