Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win three successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of a number of notable Huddersfield including Derek Ibbotson (athlete), Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), actor James Mason and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
