The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban area in this borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, well known over the years for the manufacturing of electric motors, textiles, sheet metal, wool and chemicals. The Huddersfield area has been settled for more than 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter dispute over players being paid. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning three successive league titles.

The area has been the birthplace of numerous noteworthy Huddersfield including cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, James Mason and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
