Huddersfield has a proud tradition in relation to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were also famous for winning three successive league titles.
