About Huddersfield: A large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the UK, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's 11th largest town (not including cities), being home to a population of approximately 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is placed about midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is about 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in that borough. It sits in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, renowned over the centuries for the manufacture and production of chemicals, textiles, electric motors, wool and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of significant unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs on account of increased mechanization, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and even killed mill owners. In spite of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the biggest employer in Huddersfield nowadays is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been settled for upwards of four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 and also won three successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
