Review of Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is actually the 11th largest town in the UK, having a population of around 168,000. The town is positioned roughly halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is some 191 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in that borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town near to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial area, recognized over the centuries for the production of electric motors, wool, chemicals, textiles and sheet metal. Huddersfield was the scene of much unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs as a result of increased mechanisation, wrecked mills and weaving machinery and even attacked textile mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing the biggest employer in the town nowadays is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over the payment of players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
