About Huddersfield: A huge and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield at the current time is the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town (not including cities), having a population of approximately 168,000. Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban settlement in that borough. It lies in the valleys of 2 rivers, the Holme and Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the manufacturing of chemicals, sheet metal, textiles, electric motors and wool. The town was the scene of significant violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers called the Luddites, scared of losing their jobs thanks to the threat of mechanisation, damaged mills and weaving machinery and even attacked and murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Huddersfield has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles.

The area has been the birthplace of a number of prominent Huddersfield such as cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone, movie actor James Mason, Derek Ibbotson (athlete) and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
