The town is placed midway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is approximately 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in the borough. The area has been the site of settlements for over four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which happened at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), they were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
