Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, famous over the years for the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a row over payments to players. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and 3 successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of many well known Huddersfield including Derek Ibbotson, Chris Balderstone, James Mason and former Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
