About Huddersfield: A historic and huge market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield today is the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town (not including cities), having a population of around 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest urban settlement in this borough. It lies in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is just to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, recognized over the years for the manufacture and production of chemicals, sheet metal, textiles, electric motors and wool. It was the scene of considerable violence and unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers called the Luddites, scared of losing their livelihood because of increased mechanization, wrecked machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and killing textile mill owners. Regardless of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for upwards of four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a proud sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and also won 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.

The town has been the birthplace of numerous noteworthy Huddersfield including Derek Ibbotson (athlete), Harold Wilson, Hollywood actor James Mason and Chris Balderstone.
