About Huddersfield: A large and historic market town situated in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the United Kingdom, Huddersfield today is the eleventh largest town (not including cities) in the United Kingdom, being home to a population of somewhere near 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and it is 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in this borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, well known over the centuries for the manufacturing of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. Huddersfield was the scene of some unrest during the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs on account of the march of mechanisation, wrecked machines and mills and in some cases even attacked mill owners. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing and industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for upwards of 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over the payment of players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 and also won three successive league titles.
