Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU in a row over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and three league titles on the trot.
