Review of Huddersfield: A large and historic market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield at the current time is the 11th largest town in the United Kingdom, housing a population of approximately 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is placed about halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is about 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban settlement in this borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town near the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial area, well known over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, chemicals, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. It was the scene of some unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, fearing the loss of their livelihood because of increasing mechanization, damaged weaving machinery and mills and even went to the extreme of murdering textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane). Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter dispute over payments to players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and is presently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
