Huddersfield is a mostly industrial area, famous over the centuries for the manufacturing of textiles, electric motors, wool, sheet metal and chemicals. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane). Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over the payment of players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and 3 successive league titles (1923-26).
