The town has a long tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and also won 3 successive league titles (1923-26).
