The town is positioned halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is 190 miles from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in the borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a mostly industrial area, widely known over the centuries for the production of textiles, electric motors, sheet metal, chemicals and wool. The town was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearing the loss of their jobs as a result of increased mechanization, destroyed mills and weaving machinery and in some cases even murdered textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town at present is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack. Huddersfied was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a row over players being paid. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and also won 3 league titles on the trot.

The area has been the birthplace of several well known Huddersfield including the likes of Chris Balderstone (footballer and cricketer), Derek Ibbotson (athlete), James Mason and former PM Harold Wilson.
