Review of Huddersfield: An immense and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is presently the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town (not including cities), housing a population of approximately 168,000. The town is placed halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and it is some 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield is within the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in the borough. Huddersfield sits in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial area, widely known over the centuries for the manufacture of wool, textiles, chemicals, electric motors and sheet metal. The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and progressing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill and a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane). Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a proud tradition with regards to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), they were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and also won three successive league titles.

The area has been the birthplace of various notable Huddersfield including the likes of James Mason, cricketer and footballer Chris Balderstone, athlete Derek Ibbotson and Harold Wilson.
