About Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield is actually the UK's 11th largest town, boasting a population of just over 168,000 (2017). Huddersfield is positioned roughly halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is about 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous town in the borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of two rivers, the River Colne and the River Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is to the south of the town close to the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, widely known over the centuries for the manufacture of chemicals, sheet metal, wool, textiles and electric motors. Huddersfield was the scene of considerable violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group known as the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood as a consequence of ever increasing mechanization, damaged mills and machinery and even murdered mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. Despite the predominance or industry the largest employer in Huddersfield at present is the University.

Huddersfield has been settled for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was referred to as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at Huddersfield's George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and were also famous for winning 3 successive league titles in the 1920's.
