Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and huge market town situated in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield at the current time is the UK's 11th largest town (not including cities), being home to a population of just over 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is placed halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is approximately 190 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest urban area in this borough. It stands in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and these two rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a primarily industrial town, well known over the years for the manufacture and production of wool, textiles, electric motors, sheet metal and chemicals. It was the scene of considerable violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of weavers called the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood as a result of greater mechanisation, demolished machines and mills and even went to the extreme of killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in the town today is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for over 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition in relation to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at Huddersfield's George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter disagreement over the payment of players. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning three league titles on the trot.
