About Huddersfield: A huge and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, in the UK, Huddersfield is presently the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of around 168,000. The town is positioned midway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is about 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the most populous town in this borough. It lies in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these 2 rivers is to the south of the town beside the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, well known over the centuries for the production and manufacture of textiles, sheet metal, wool, electric motors and chemicals. The town was the scene of much unrest and violence during the Industrial Revolution when a group called the Luddites, fearful of losing their jobs on account of the threat of mechanization, demolished machines and mills and even went to the extreme of attacking and killing mill owners. Huddersfield has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a proud tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU. The same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), they were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were also famous for winning three league titles on the trot.
