Huddersfield a Potted History: A historic and large market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, UK, Huddersfield is at present the eleventh largest town in the United Kingdom, boasting a population in excess of 168,000. Huddersfield is placed about halfway between the cities of Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and it is 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in this borough. It sits in the valleys of the River Colne and the River Holme and these two rivers meet to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

Huddersfield is a chiefly industrial town, famous over the years for the manufacture of sheet metal, chemicals, electric motors, textiles and wool. The town was the scene of significant unrest during the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, fearful of losing their livelihood due to ever increasing mechanization, destroyed mills and machinery and even went as far as attacking and killing textile mill owners. Despite the predominance or industry and manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

The area has been settled for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition of sporting excellence and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when twenty two clubs split from the RFU in a bitter row over payments to players. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (1-0 against Preston North End) and three successive league titles.
