Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long sporting tradition and is where Rugby League was born, which happened at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs broke away from the RFU. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their football team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded later in 1908 and presently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and also won three successive league titles in 1924,25 and 26).

The town has been the birthplace of several noteworthy Huddersfield including footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone, Hollywood actor James Mason, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson and athlete Derek Ibbotson.
