The town of Huddersfield is positioned halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles south-west of Leeds and is 190 miles away from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre for the metropolitan borough of Kirklees and is the largest settlement in that borough. Huddersfield stands in the valleys of two rivers, the Colne and Holme and these 2 rivers meet to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a largely industrial town, widely known over the years for the manufacturing of chemicals, textiles, sheet metal, electric motors and wool. It was the scene of significant violence and unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their livelihood as a result of greater mechanisation, demolished mills and their machines and even attacked and murdered mill owners. In spite of the predominance or industry the largest employer in the town today is the University.

The area has been the site of settlements for over four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (near Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sports and is where Rugby League was born, which came into being at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a dispute over payments to players. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded 13 years later in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town were winners of the FA Cup in 1922 and were the first English club to win three successive league titles.

The town has been the birthplace of several well known Huddersfield including the likes of Derek Ibbotson, footballer and cricketer Chris Balderstone, James Mason and former PM Harold Wilson.
