The town of Huddersfield is placed midway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles north-east of Manchester and is 190 miles distance from London.

Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the Domesday Book (written in 1086) where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a long tradition with regards to sport and is the home and birthplace of Rugby League, which came into being at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded some years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles (1923-1926).
