About Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town located in the county of West Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom, Huddersfield is at present the United Kingdom's eleventh largest town, being home to a population of somewhere near 168,000 (2017). The town of Huddersfield is placed roughly halfway between the cities of Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and it is some 191 miles from London.

Huddersfield is included in the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the largest settlement in that borough. Huddersfield lies in the valleys of the River Holme and the River Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town beside the University of Huddersfield.

Huddersfield is a predominantly industrial town, recognized over the centuries for the production of sheet metal, textiles, wool, electric motors and chemicals. The town was the scene of significant unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when a group of textile workers known as the Luddites, faced with losing their jobs as a result of the march of mechanisation, damaged mills and their machines and even went as far as killing textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or manufacturing the largest employer in Huddersfield these days is the University.

The Huddersfield area has been the site of settlements for more than four thousand years, beginning with Neolithic man and proceeding through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The town has a proud tradition with regards to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at the George Hotel on the 29th August 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a bitter disagreement over players being paid. Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded soon after in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were victorious in the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and 3 successive league titles.
