Review of Huddersfield: An enormous and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, UK, Huddersfield today is the UK's eleventh largest town, boasting a population of approximately 168,000. Huddersfield is placed halfway between Manchester and Leeds being about 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and 20 miles to the south-west of Leeds and is some 190 miles driving distance from London.

Huddersfield is part of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in this borough. It lies in the valleys of the rivers Colne and Holme and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town adjacent to the University.

The area has been settled for more than four thousand years, starting with Neolithic man and moving on through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was identified as Oderesfelt and Odresfeld.

The Huddersfield of Huddersfield has a long tradition with regards to sport and is where Rugby League was born, which occurred at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a bitter disagreement over the payment of players. Also in 1895 the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is at present in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (at Stamford Bridge) and were the first English club to win three league titles on the trot.
