The town has a long tradition with regards to sport and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which occurred at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the Rugby Football Union in a disagreement over players being paid. In the same year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their soccer club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and is currently in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win 3 successive league titles (1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26).
