It was the scene of some violent unrest at the time of the Industrial Revolution when the Luddites, in fear of losing their jobs because of increased mechanisation, damaged mills and weaving machinery and in some cases even attacked textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. The area has been the site of settlements for more than 4,000 years, beginning with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to the present day. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack (Outlane) and a late Bronze Age or early Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was noted in the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086) where it was identified as Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

Huddersfield has a long tradition for sport and is where Rugby League was born, which took place at the George Hotel in Huddersfield on August 29th 1895, when 22 clubs split from the RFU in a dispute over players being paid. In that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was established. Their football club Huddersfield Town AFC was founded in 1908 and currently holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield were the winners of the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End) and 3 league titles on the trot.

The town has been the birthplace of a number of well known Huddersfield including actor James Mason, former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, Chris Balderstone and Derek Ibbotson (athlete).
