About Huddersfield: A very large and historic market town located in the English county of West Yorkshire, In the United Kingdom, Huddersfield is currently the UK's eleventh largest town, being home to a population of around 168,000. The town of Huddersfield is positioned halfway between Leeds and Manchester being about 20 miles south-west of Leeds and 28 miles to the north-east of Manchester and is some 191 miles drive from London.

Huddersfield is the administrative centre of the Kirklees metropolitan borough and is the most populous settlement in that borough. It stands in the valleys of the rivers Holme and Colne and the confluence of these two rivers is just to the south of the town close to the University.

Huddersfield is a mainly industrial town, recognized over the years for the production of electric motors, chemicals, sheet metal, wool and textiles. It was the scene of considerable unrest and violence at the time of the Industrial Revolution when Luddites, terrified of losing their livelihood due to greater mechanisation, wrecked weaving machinery and mills and in some cases even attacked textile mill owners, notably one William Horsfall. In spite of the predominance or industry the largest employer in Huddersfield today is the University.

The area has been settled for upwards of 4,000 years, starting with Neolithic man and advancing through Brigantes, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Normans to modern times. Huddersfield has been the site of two ancient forts, a Roman fort at Slack Lane (Outlane) and an Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill. Huddersfied was listed in the 1086 Domesday Book where it was called Odresfeld and Oderesfelt.

The town has a proud tradition with regards to sports and is the birthplace of Rugby League, which took place at the George Hotel on August 29th 1895, when twenty two clubs broke away from the RFU (Rugby Football Union). Also in that year the Huddersfield Giants Rugby League team was founded. Their soccer team Huddersfield Town AFC was founded a few years later in 1908 and at present holds a place in the Premier League (2017), Huddersfield Town won the FA Cup in 1922 (beating Preston North End 1-0) and were the first English club to win three league titles on the trot.
